Future guests (Angela Hartnett and Ravneet Gill among them) should bring greater expertise, but the camerawork is sumptuous regardless: the landscapes look almost good enough to eat, the food presented so seductively that you could stare at it for hours. “It’s all about the ingredients and the method they are using,” he rhapsodises over one especially fine meal. The format resembles The Trip, with hands-on kitchen experiences but without the jokes (although there is no shortage of laughter), and Sirieix is prone to stating the obvious.
It’s hard to disagree when Sirieix calls it “heaven on earth”. Still, there is no arguing with O’Leary’s taste in restaurants: Sirieix is wowed by a variety of raw seafood platters, homemade pasta, slow-cooked pork and the finest “peasant food” traditions of the area. In spite of trailing his globetrotting around some of the world’s great gastronomic heartlands as being in the company of “some of Britain’s most celebrated chefs and foodies”, he begins with TV presenter Dermot O’Leary, who is at his most bumptious as he shows Sirieix around Puglia.
